George Burns and Gracie Allen TV Shows

Filed under: Uncategorized — tvrevue @ 9:21 pm

This is a 16 DVD collection of some of Burns and Allen’s most hilarious episodes. The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show was one of the first comedies to make the successful transition from radio to television. Burns left most of the laughs to Allen, who had a way of engaging in conversation of “illogical logic” that left her friends and associates dazed and confused and the audiences in stitches. Gracie pulls one stunt after another, while George steps out of the scene to narrate. Great family fun! This 2 album 16 DVD collection contains over 30 hours of wonderful classic television. Many of the shows include the original commercials. Available from The Nostalgia Merchant.

When The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, aka The Burns and Allen Show, began on CBS television October 12, 1950, it was an immediate success. The show was originally live before a studio audience. Ever the businessman, Burns realized it would be more efficient to do the series on film; the half-hour episodes could then be syndicated. With 291 episodes, the show had a long network run through 1958 and continued in syndicated reruns for years.

The Life of Riley – Jackie Gleason series

The Life of Riley

The Life of Riley

THE LIFE OF RILEY (1949) has an interesting history for that it is remembered, if at all, solely as the role created by William Bendix. This in part is true, for that Bendix did originate the role of Chester A. Riley on radio in 1944. Although it’s been said that he was unavailable to star in the TV series in 1949, he did get to star as Riley in the 1949 Universal-International movie version of that same name with Rosemary DeCamp as his wife, Peg. As for the TV series, the Dumont network substituted the unavailable Bendix for the not-so-well-known Jackie Gleason as Riley. After 26 episodes, the series was cancelled in early 1950. Life of Riley

Life of Riley

Televisons classic lovable bumbler, Chester Riley, was played by William Bendix. Marjorie Reynolds portrayed his wife Peg, and Wesley Morgan was Junior. The program first appeared in 1949, with Jackie Gleason and Rosemary De Camp in the leading roles, and was on for two seasons. Bendix started the new series in 1953, and it remained on the air for five years before going into syndication. The sitcom centered around Riley himself, a gullible and occasionally clumsy (but big-hearted) lug, and the doings and undoings of his family. Riley’s penchant for turning mere trouble into near-disaster through his well-intentioned bumbling was often aided or instigated by his arch best friend/next-door neighbor, Gillis.
